5 of the Best Movies on Netflix Right Now
Good morning! I hope you’re having a good day so far. I’m keeping today’s newsletter short, sweet, and informative for the weekend ahead.

New Place!
Finding great movies on Netflix can be challenging due to its vast library and sometimes tricky interface because there genuinely is so much to watch on Netflix. However, to make it easier, I’ve curated a list of 5 top films currently streaming in the U.S. I am giving you recommendations for movies to watch and recommendations in recommendations for movies of similar stature. (Streaming availability may change without notice)
We’re starting very strong, something that was based in Detroit, which is exciting, to say the least.
“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” (2024)
Eddie Murphy returns as Detroit cop Axel Foley in this fourth "Beverly Hills Cop" film. Though it's been 30 years, the story about Axel's estranged daughter and department corruption gives the sequel depth, akin to Tom Cruise in “Top Gun: Maverick” or Sylvester Stallone in “Creed.” It’s a nostalgic yet fresh take, complete with thrilling car chases. (Check out “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Beverly Hills Cop II” on Netflix too.)
“Call Me By Your Name” (2017)
Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of André Aciman’s novel, with an Oscar-winning screenplay by James Ivory, initially meanders but builds to a powerful emotional climax. Timothée Chalamet shines as 17-year-old Elio, who experiences first love with graduate student Armie Hammer. Set in stunning rural Italy and featuring a charming cast, including Michael Stuhlbarg, Guadagnino masterfully captures the intensity of first love. (For more Oscar-nominated dramas, check out “1917,” “Captain Phillips,” or “Living.”)
“Hit Man” (2024)
Richard Linklater directs this true story of Gary Johnson, a schoolteacher who moonlights as an electronics expert for the New Orleans Police and ends up as a fake hitman. Glen Powell stars as Johnson, showcasing his range from mild-mannered to unexpected hero. His attraction to a potential client (played by Adria Arjona) adds to the intrigue, while Linklater also explores deeper themes of personal transformation. For a more severe hitman film, check out “Léon: The Professional.”
“The Edge of Seventeen” (2016)
Hailee Steinfeld stars as Nadine Franklin, a typical yet troubled teen in Kelly Fremon Craig's brilliant, bittersweet comedy. As Nadine hits rock bottom in high school, she finds support from a patient teacher (Woody Harrelson) and a complicated best friend (Haley Lu Richardson). Steinfeld delivers a spot-on portrayal of teenage angst and social anxiety. Check out “The Breakfast Club” on Netflix for a similar blend of wit and insight.
“Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget” (2023)
Aardman Animations’ lively sequel to “Chicken Run” (2000) captures the original’s charm while offering a fresh twist. This time, Ginger and Rocky’s daughter Molly get trapped in a food factory, leading the chickens on a heist adventure. “Dawn of the Nugget” cleverly mixes heist elements with its signature humor and impressive design. For more family-friendly fun, check out “Paddington,” “Matilda,” and “Storks.”
Thank you so much for reading this newsletter! I hope you have an excellent rest of your week. I’ll speak to you all on Friday!
Cheers,
Ariana :^)
