What Makes "The Bear" So Irresistible?
+ Exploring Its Appeal and Cultural Impact
Good morning! Thank you to the five new people who joined us! I am so happy to have you all here! I watched The Bear take over our lives, literally and figuratively. As a former cook, I found it hard not to get caught up in a conversation about The Bear because that is what I used to do. Cook. When talking to people whom I haven't had the pleasure of speaking to in a while, I always find a way to ask if I have ever watched the show The Bear.
In short, no. I have not. I started, too, but realized that it brought back a lot of condescending and stressful moments for me because living it and then watching it after you get off of a shift can be a bit much. However, now that I have detached from this narrative, I will try watching this show again.
The first time I heard someone call Corner who didn't work in the restaurant industry or even know who to work in a kitchen caught me off guard. Then, eventually, as the show progressed, it seemed to become a national bit where everyone shouted "CORNER" or even "I need 52 PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICHES NOW!" followed by, "YES, CHEF!"
If you were/are closely following The Bear, you would realize that they didn't just get the food right in the show but also the representation of the chefs. This is huge because there are so many intricate details and complex emotions you have to deal with when being a chef, and having to make choices not just for you but for the whole staff when you're under fire can be a little scary. \
Upon reflecting on the show's first two episodes, you understand there isn't just one crucial character, two important characters, or three. Everyone plays a vital role in this show, and you can see that as the show continues to establish its presence on Hulu and other services.
The Bear opens the door for you not just to look but to shop the chef aesthetic as well; not only does it have you looking to buy a pair of Birkenstocks because that's what the chefs are wearing in the show, but even to buy a large pack of Sharpies from Amazon to have in your kitchen, or cup, pint, or even quart containers so you can label things and then easily organize them in the fridge.
There are so many reasons why we watch The Bear. Maybe it's for the humor within the show; perhaps it's to watch these rising stars create a more prominent name for themselves, or maybe it's just because we like the intensity of the show and how shouting "CORNER" can be so much fun around the house, at work, or even outside, for that matter.
Nonetheless, I am happy and thankful that Courtney Stoerer and her brother, Christopher Storer, created The Bear to inform everyone that so much work goes into restaurants. They put a lot of time and effort into this show to make it as authentic as possible! All the actors worked in fine dining restaurants for a week before shooting for the show and took an actual cooking class to help prepare them for what's to come when using—a knife, meat slicer, restaurant-style stove, etc. To be an essential worker, you must care for a community and make one you can call your own.
Please let me know your thoughts, feelings, and emotions about the show itself!
Season 3 started yesterday! You can view it on Hulu or Disney+! All the episodes will be released simultaneously, so please binge the show and let me know how it is, as I will be doing the same!
Cheers,
Ariana :)
